22 virus deaths in Valley as available ICU beds reach new low

There were another 22 COVID-19 related deaths throughout the Rio Grande Valley, county officials reported Tuesday, as the number of available intensive care unit beds reached a pandemic low of only six.

Hidalgo County officials reported nine additional COVID-related deaths along with 346 new cases, a majority of which continue to consist of people younger than 30 years old.

The nine additional deaths, which included a McAllen woman in her 30s and a Pharr woman in her 40s, raise the total number of deaths in the county to 3,110.

Of the 346 new cases, 60 are confirmed, 282 are probable and four are suspected.

Children 11 and younger made up 107 of those new cases, while those between the ages 12 and 19 made up 51 of the new cases. Individuals in their 20s made up 43 of those cases, those in their 30s made up 47 and people in their 40s accounted for 40.

The county also reported there were 406 COVID hospitalizations of which 381 were adult patients and 25 were pediatric patients.

Of the total hospitalizations, there were 142 patients being treated in intensive care units of which 137 were adult patients and five were pediatric patients.

Throughout the entire Valley trauma service area, there were a total of 624 COVID hospitalizations on Monday, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services that was posted on Tuesday.

That data also showed that there were only six available ICU beds throughout the Valley, the lowest amount available since the start of the pandemic.

Cameron County health officials reported 13 new COVID-19 related deaths that occurred within the last two weeks. Of those individuals, 11 were unvaccinated. There are now a total of 1,786 COVID-19 related deaths there.

The county also reported 223 new cases on Tuesday, raising the total number of cases to 49,389.

There were 32 new confirmed cases in Starr County and 21 new confirmed cases in Willacy County, according to DSHS.
