Police: Man offered 5,000 pesos to officer

A 32-year-old Brownsville man is facing a bribery charge after he tried to pay an officer 5,000 pesos for his release.

Erasmo Resendez Gomez, 30, was being administered an Intoxilyzer test at the Brownsville City Jail on Saturday when he offered a Brownsville police officer the pesos, said Investigator Martin Sandoval, spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department.

Sandoval said a Rancho Viejo police officer had arrested Gomez on a charge of driving while intoxicated and had transported him to the Brownsville City Jail, where he would undergo an the breath test.

“While conducting the 15-minute waiting period for a breath sample, Gomez offered the Brownsville police officer 5,000 pesos to be released,” Sandoval said. “When asked if he was trying to bribe a police officer, Gomez did not answer. Gomez then offered the police officer more money at a later time and he was then charged with bribery.”

Gomez was arraigned on the bribery charge and his bond was set at $5,000.
