Emergency personnel responds to Brownsville gas leak

The City of Brownsville’s emergency personnel responded to an emergency phone call at 1:47 p.m. Monday to address a possible gas leak at the 100 block of East Ruben M. Torres Boulevard in Brownsville.

The Brownsville Fire Department and Police Department arrived at the scene six minutes after the call and a fire officer made contact with a work crew at the area, officials said Tuesday.

Officials said the crew was working to repair or install some underground fiber optic lines and one of the workers inadvertently hit a gas line causing a leak.

“As part of the City of Brownsville’s Fire Department’s protocol to ensure the safety of everyone within the immediate area, all of Ruben M. Torres Blvd. (FM 802) was closed, while crews repaired the gas lines,” officials said in a statement Tuesday.

The fire department continued to monitor the area by evaluating the air for the presence of natural gas, and it was determined that all levels were within normal limits, officials said. However, they remained on the scene on standby while reparation of the gas line took place, officials said.

“At approximately 5:40 p.m. (Monday) it was determined that the scene was safe and City of Brownsville emergency personnel were relieved to their immediate duties,” the statement reads.
