Brownsville police: Scammers using social media pages to swindle money

What you post on social media can lead to scammers trying to swindle you out of money.

The Brownsville Police Department is warning individuals to be cautious about an on-going telephone scam, in which scammers are gathering information from your social media accounts.

According to authorities, the scammers will call you up and tell you that you have warrants out for your arrests or you owe companies money.

In order to dismiss the warrants you are asked to deposit money into a Bitcoin account. This is a scam.

The department said in its Facebook page ”All the information they have gathered from you comes from your social media posts or information about you that can be found on the internet. It will appear as if it is real because of the amount of information they may potentially know about you…Please be aware of what you post on your social media pages.”

Police say if you feel that you are being scammed, you need to hang up the phone and call the Brownsville Police Department Immediately to report the scammers at (956) 548-7000.
