‘Trump Train’ gathers in Combes in show of support

COMBES — An array of cars and trucks displaying flags in support of former President Donald J. Trump parked at the Road Ranger gas station early Wednesday morning in Combes.

Wearing red, white and blue and “Make America Great Again” caps, men and women of all ages prepared to head to Edinburg and hopefully get a glimpse of the former president.

People were told on social media to meet at the gas station promptly at 9:15 a.m.

Before 9 a.m., however, cars were already lined up and getting their flags ready.

Jim Cheaney said as soon as he found out Trump would be visiting the Rio Grande Valley, he was ready to attend the Trump Train. His wife and dog were accompanying him

Cheaney said the group would be heading to the airport where Trump was expected to arrive. Cheaney said his wife was hoping to get an autograph.

“Toby is a Trump supporter,” Cheaney said, referring to his dog.

Cheaney expected it would be raining by the time the former president arrived.

Alicia Wingler, of Harlingen, said she met with Cameron County Conservatives a few days back and found out about the spot. However, it was through social media she found out Trump would be visiting.

“I am a conservative, and I feel like our country is going down the drain. I am here to make sure I am not just sitting home complaining, get out there and show your support,” Wingler said.

Wingler was displaying the American flag, Texas flag, Trump Train flag and Blue Lives Matter flag.

Chuck Sneed, 17, of Harlingen, said he was in attendance with his family and was there in support of America.

“I believe in America first, and I think Trump was the main person behind the America first movement. We believe the U.S. values should be first, traditional values, Christian values,” Sneed said.

“I just want to see the president, that’s all,” Sneed said.

Carlos Canas, 59, of San Benito, was in attendance with his wife.

Canas and his wife both wore T-shirts with a picture of Trump in various colors. Canas said they were made by his wife.

Both have attended at least three Trump Train caravans and previously waited to see him in Harlingen when he visited the Valley as president, arriving at Valley International Airport.

Canas said the couple was going to go out of town to celebrate their anniversary but decided to stay.

“We love him very much because he loves America,” Canas said.
