3 more die due to COVID in Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County reported three COVID-19 related deaths and 91 additional cases of the virus Wednesday.

The three deaths include a man in his 60s from Mercedes, a man over 70 from Mission, and a woman over 70 from Weslaco. Wednesday’s reported deaths raise the county’s death toll to 2,903.

Wednesday’s 91 COVID-19 cases include 56 confirmed cases, and 35 probable cases. These cases raise the county’s total number of positive COVID-19 cases to 92,767, of which 60,549 were confirmed, 30,027 probable and 2,191 suspected.

As of Wednesday morning, there were 60 people in county hospitals with the virus, and 22 people in intensive care units.

The county also reported that 90 people were released from isolation Wednesday, raising that total to 89.422. There are 442 net active cases of the virus.

The county has administered a total of 529,697 COVID-19 tests, and 436,134 of those tests had negative results.

Cameron County reported two COVID-19 related deaths and 24 additional confirmed cases of the virus there Wednesday.

The two deaths include a Brownsville woman in her 70s and a Harlingen woman in her 40s, raising the COVID-19 death toll there to 1,682.

Wednesday’s 24 confirmed cases include five people from unaccompanied minor shelters and detention centers in Brownsville and Los Fresnos. The county’s total number of confirmed cases now stands at 42,019.

The county also reported that an additional 59 people recovered from the virus, raising that total to 39,599.

As of Wednesday evening, 62.24% of the county’s population ages 12 years and older have been fully vaccinated, and 74.19% of that demographic have received at least one dose. Additionally, 79.84% of the county’s population ages 65 years and older have been fully vaccinated, and 88.15% of that demographic have received at least one dose.
