Flood advisory extended in Cameron County

The National Weather Service in Brownsville has extended a flood advisory for South Central Cameron County until 3:30 p.m. today.

At 1:35 p.m., Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. In some areas up to one inch of rain has fallen.

NWS forecasters say another one to two inches are expected over the area, which will cause minor flooding.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Rancho Viejo, Olmito, Brownsville, San Pedro, Villa Nueva Elementary School, Olmito Lake, Rancho Viejo City Hall, La Encantada Elementary School, Villa Cavazos, Resaca De La Palma Reservoir and Ranchito.

Many streets in San Benito had high water, making some of them difficult to navigate. Some sections of Business 77 and Sam Houston Boulevard had water across the roads.

Lots of drivers on the expressway had their hazard lights on, while others pulled over to the side of the road waiting for the thunderstorms to pass.
