Forecaster say there’s a chance of showers today

As weather forecasters continue to monitor the Gulf of Mexico for the possible development of some type of tropical system, the Rio Grande Valley could be in for some showers today.

The National Weather Service in Brownsville reports there’s a 40% chance of showers for today and there’s between a 20% to 30% chance of thunderstorms tonight.

A lightning alert has been issued for the Brownsville area that remains in effect until 11:07 a.m.

The National Hurricane Center indicates there’s 90% chance that the system in the Gulf could develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours. The system will continue to drift north through the Gulf of Mexico approaching the northern Gulf of Mexico later Friday/Saturday.
