Pharr woman faces meth, heroin charges

A Pharr woman faces multiple drug conspiracy charges related to a summer 2019 incident where federal agents discovered bundles inside a vehicle she was driving.

Amparo Mendo Reyes, 41, faces the possibility of a long prison sentence for her alleged involvement in a scheme with other people to move meth and heroin, records show.

The investigation into Reyes began with federal agents surveilling the residence of an Alamo man.

On July 23, 2019, agents saw the man at the residence travel to a Walmart and exit the vehicle.

A short while later, the man was seen exiting the store and then leaving the area.

“(The man) departed the Walmart and traveled to the area of S. Austin Dr. and Hi Line Rd, in Pharr, Texas,” the record shows.

There, the man received two large packages from the driver of a tractor trailer registered to a location in Tamaulipas, Mexico.

The man then left and went to a carwash in McAllen.

“At approximately 10:18 p.m., Agents observed (the man) open the back door of a silver Dodge Avenger, Texas registration… and another unknown Hispanic female near the rear of the red Jetta,” the document stated.

The man from Alamo and the unknown Hispanic woman left the area. Agents on July 24, 2019, identified her as Reyes, who was seen arriving at an apartment complex in Pharr.

That day, agents saw Reyes make another trip; this time to the parking lot of a Wells Fargo in Pharr.

“Agents observed Reyes depart in the black Tahoe and travel to the Dollar General in Pharr, Texas,” the record shows. “Reyes exited the black Tahoe and entered the store.”

Reyes subsequently left the store and returned to her residence in Pharr. She made one more trip to a gas station where agents finally searched the vehicle she was driving.

During a search of the vehicle, agents found two speaker boxes containing bundles of drugs previously seen in the cargo area of the vehicle. In total, agents found 4.7 kilograms of heroin and roughly 22 kilos of meth.

Reyes’ trial was set for Wednesday, but on Tuesday, the court granted additional time to prepare for the pending jury trial, records show.
