A man who Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputies found with a gunshot wound and died after being transported to a local hospital has been identified.

Alex Diaz, 21, was found with a gunshot wound to his torso after deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call at a ranch property located on Mile 5 ½ West in rural Elsa late Friday night.

According to the release, the 9-1-1 call indicated a man had been shot.

Diaz was transported to a local hospital by Air Med, where he succumbed to his injury.

His cousin, Raul Reyes, allegedly told sheriff’s investigators that Diaz accidentally shot himself with his gun, according to authorities.

However, through the course of the investigation, witnesses told a sheriff’s investigator that they heard Diaz say he had been shot by Reyes, authorities investigating the case have said.

On Sunday, Reyes was formally charged with manslaughter, a second degree felony, by Justice of the Peace Jason Peña.

Reyes remains jailed, with his bond set at $300,000.
