Emergency rescue teams, including a dive team are at Gayman Bridge on State Highway 48 where a vehicle fell from the bridge and into the water.

The bridge goes over the Bahia Grande Channel and is a popular place for fishing.

On Twitter, Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza posted photos of a white SUV floating in the water.

“A rescue effort is underway by several agencies,” Garza posted. “Coast Guard is on the way with boats and air support.”

Brownsville Fire Chief Jarrett Sheldon said the SUV was submerged under water.

“We are currently responding to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 48 Gayman’s bridge with a vehicle submerged. Port Isabel and Brownsville fire department are the responding agencies. Still pending info but we are responding with two fire engines, one rescue truck, a dive team and drone unit,” Sheldon said.

The sheriff said anyone driving on Highway 48 is asked to use extreme caution because of the number of emergency vehicles on the highway.

This is a developing story. We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
