LOS FRESNOS — This week, all of Cameron County’s teachers will all be vaccinated against the coronavirus, officials said Wednesday.

Today, county health officials plan to vaccinate 2,200 teachers during a vaccination clinic to be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Los Fresnos Fire Department.

“This week, we can safely say we will have vaccinated all the teachers in Cameron County,” Melissa Elizardi, the county’s spokeswoman, said.

The clinic will administer vaccines to teachers from school districts including San Benito, Los Fresnos, Santa Rosa, Santa Maria and South Texas along with teachers from IDEA Public Schools, the Marine Military Academy, the Catholic Dioceses of Brownsville, Jubilee Academies, Neighbors in Need of Services and Harmony Schools.

Earlier this week, county officials set aside 600 doses to help the Harlingen school district hold a vaccination clinic.

On Friday, the Brownsville school district plans to administer 920 doses of the Moderna vaccine during its second vaccination clinic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recognized teachers as “essential workers” critical to helping keep schools open, leading President Joe Biden’s administration to push for their vaccinations by the end of the month.

Los Fresnos clinic

Meanwhile, the county has set aside 500 doses of the Moderna vaccine to help the city of Los Fresnos hold a vaccination clinic from 10 a.m. to noon at the city’s fire department.

“We’re glad to be a part of it and glad we can help,” City Manager Mark Milum said.

The clinic will target people 65 and older, those 18 and older suffering underlying medical conditions along with day care workers, he said.

“We’re calling those businesses directly,” Milum said, referring to area day care centers, adding the clinic has pre-registered people requesting vaccinations.

For weeks, county leaders have been working with Los Fresnos officials to hold vaccination clinics at the fire department located next to the city’s rodeo arena.

“We’re very proud and honored to be able help anybody who needs a vaccination,” Milum said. “We are fortunate to have a good facility with the rodeo grounds and the fire department to be able to get a lot of people quickly. Our facility is designed to do a lot of people fast.”

Port Isabel, Los Indios clinics

Meanwhile, county officials are setting aside 500 vaccine doses to help the cities of Port Isabel and Los Indios hold their own vaccination clinics, Elizardi said, adding information regarding the cities’ clinic dates was not readily available.

Since last month, county leaders have been working with city officials to help area cities hold their own hometown vaccination clinics aimed at cutting waiting periods and travel.

“The focus here is to get shots in arms as quickly as possible,” Elizardi said.

Harlingen, Brownsville second-dose clinics

This week, county health officials are also helping the cities of Harlingen and Brownsville hold clinics aimed at administering the Moderna vaccine’s second and final dose.

In Harlingen, officials plan to administer 1,000 doses to people 65 and older who received their first dose on Feb. 12.

The second-dose clinic will be held Friday at the Harlingen Convention Center.

In Brownsville, officials plan to administer 1,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine to people who received their first dose on Feb. 13.

The clinic will be held Saturday at Texas Southmost College’s ITEC Center.
