Large grassfire near Encino threatens homes

Rio Grande Valley firefighters are headed to Encino to help put out a large fire that is threatening homes.

Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider said his department was responding to the fire shortly after 2 p.m. Friday.

Encino is a small community just south of Falfurrias, located along U.S. Highway 281 in Brooks County.

Brooks County Sheriff Benny Martinez said two homes were evacuated, but no injuries were reported.

Six Pharr firefighters were also sent to help put out the blaze. Three were assigned to a tanker truck and three to a brush truck. The Weslaco Fire Department also responded to the call for mutual aid.
