Former Mission mayor to seek office again

Former Mission Mayor Norberto “Beto” Salinas is seeking another term as mayor and asking residents to give him an opportunity to “put everything back in place,” according to a news release he issued Friday.

Salinas announced his intent to run in the city’s 2022 mayoral election, criticizing the current administration’s handling of the city’s finances.

“I’ve been asked to run because everything is coming down and it’s not something that I wanted to do but the more I see the condition the city is in the more I feel I need to do it,” Salinas stated in the release.

He previously served as mayor of the city for 20 years until he lost his reelection bid in 2018 to current Mayor Armando O’Caña.

Following his loss, which was decided in a runoff election, Salinas filed an election contest, claiming O’Caña’s campaign had illegally harvested votes.

At the conclusion of the trial, Judge J. Bonner Dorsey ruled in favor of Salinas. That ruling, however, was later overturned on appeal, allowing O’Caña to remain in office.
