Classes in McAllen canceled until Monday

Several Hidalgo County districts have announced additional closures due to the ongoing impact caused by low temperatures and winter weather across the state.

McAllen ISD announced that it would close through the rest of the week Tuesday with plans to return to normal operating procedures Monday, a release said.

“With growing reports of families experiencing power outages, water and fuel shortages already numbering in the thousands, McAllen ISD made this decision with the best interests of the community in mind as many families are struggling with these challenges,” the release read.

The district is offering hotspots for families who need them from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the MISD Central Office.

Varsity athletics events for the week are expected to run as scheduled, and a limited number of employees may be needed to respond to facility and other issues.

According to the release, the district will continue monitoring weather forecasts and will post updates as changes are needed.

Mercedes ISD is closing all district schools and offices for Thursday and Friday.

Weslaco ISD will be closed Thursday and Friday and will evaluate the situation over the weekend and post an update Sunday.

Donna ISD closed Thursday and Friday, although meal distribution will continue. Info on meal distribution is available on the district’s social media.

PSJA is canceling school for the rest of the week. Classes are set to resume Monday and meal distribution will continue at locations without power outages.

Information on meal distribution will be posted by the district each morning.

“The power shortage in our area is still far from over,” a release read.

Edinburg CISD is canceling classes for Thursday and Friday.

Edcouch-Elsa ISD will be closed for the remainder of the week and plans to resume operations Monday.

“ I pray that you and your families are as safe as possible as we endure these hardships due to lack of water and electricity,” a statement from Superintendent Greg Rodriguez reads.

Mission CISD is canceling classes through the week and plans to resume instruction Monday.

“Campus instructional staff will receive further information from their campus administration,” reads a release from the district. “Auxiliary staff required for operations will be notified by their supervisors about their scheduled reporting times and assignments.”

Valley View ISD is canceling all classes, closing facilities and halting meal distribution for Thursday. As of Wednesday afternoon, the district still planned to reopen Friday.

Hidalgo ISD is canceling classes for the rest of the week. Classes are expected to resume Monday.

“The health and safety of our students and staff will always be the District’s top priority,” a statement from the district reads.

IDEA Schools is canceling classes for Thursday and plans to share updates regarding Friday classes via text or social media.

South Texas College is canceling classes and services for the rest of the week and plans to resume Monday. Updates will be posted through the college’s emergency alert system, its website and social media.

UTRGV is canceling all classes for Thursday and will remain closed.

“When UTRGV reopens and classes resume, students who continue to experience power outages/Internet connectivity issues should contact their faculty members and apprise them of their situation as soon as possible,” a statement reads. “Faculty members will work with those students to ensure the continuity of their coursework.”
