Brownsville opens 24-hour warming center at Sports Park

BROWNSVILLE — The city of Brownsville announced Wednesday that it has opened a 24-hour warming center at the Brownsville Sports Park for residents left without power who need warmth or a place to recharge electronics.

Starting Wednesday, residents have access to the 24-hour warming center with pets welcomed if they are brought in a portable kennel. Visitors are asked to provide their own chargers and Wi-Fi access will be available.

COVID-19 screening will be conducted prior to entering the warming center, social distancing measures have been implemented, and face mask usage is always required.

“Supporting our residents during these cold and challenging times is a priority for the City,” Mayor Trey Mendez said in a press release.

“To our community, feel free to go to this warming center to recharge your devices. We ask that you have patience during this statewide emergency and help us conserve as much energy as possible.”

The announcement came after Brownsville Public Utilities Board Chief Executive Officer John Bruciak said during a joint press conference with the city of Brownsville that the rotating outages, and the outages due to equipment failure, will likely continue until the weekend due to the high demand of electricity throughout the state of Texas.

The Brownsville Sports Park is located at 1000 Sports Park Blvd.

The city of Brownsville and the Brownsville Public Utilities Board are providing daily updates live on the city’s official Facebook page each morning at 10:00 a.m.

Residents are urged to conserve energy by turning down thermostats to 68 degrees, and by unplugging non-essential lights and appliances, the press release reads.
