Edcouch to offer hot meals Tuesday

The city of Edcouch will be distributing 1,000 hot meals to residents who have been without power there since early Monday morning.

The entire town of 5,000 is without power, according to Edcouch City Manager Victor Hugo de la Cruz.

Priority will be given to the elderly, with city staff making deliveries to those residents beginning at about 6 p.m.

Other residents can pick up a plate of chicken, rice and beans at a drive-thru distribution at the Edcouch fire station.

Water service was also interrupted when a backup generator at the water plant failed, de la Cruz said. When crews tried to connect to neighboring water lines with the North Alamo Water Supply, those lines froze, leaving Edcouch residents dry.

A local man donated the use of 20 50-gallon drums, which officials filled with water from nearby irrigation canals. Residents are invited to fill empty containers for use in their restrooms, de la Cruz said.

The water is not suitable for drinking.
