McALLEN — A commissioner who is running for mayor was reportedly involved in an accident involving a bicyclist Wednesday.

McAllen City Commissioner Veronica Whitacre did not deny the allegations, and instead spoke vaguely about the alleged incident.

“Everything is good. There’s no problems. Everybody is safe,” she said when reached by The Monitor via phone. “So, there’s no story for it.”

Before excusing herself to attend to another phone call, she added, “Thank God it all worked out. Not to worry.”

The accident reportedly happened near the intersection of Peking and Business 83 and involved a 78-year-old man on a bicycle who suffered non life-threatening injuries.

McAllen Police Department Lt. Joel Morales said the incident occurred at 12:12 p.m. with police responding to a report of a crash involving an SUV and a bicycle.

The 78-year-old man went to the hospital for medical evaluation.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, Morales said.

Whitacre remained at the scene.
