20 more succumb to COVID-19 in RGV, more than 800 cases reported 

At least 20 more people died due to complications related to COVID-19 in the Rio Grande Valley and there were more than 800 new cases, according to county officials.

Hidalgo County reported another 11 COVID-19 related deaths on Friday along with 719 confirmed cases.

The 11 deaths raise the number of fatalities in the county to 2,489 since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 719 new cases include 581 confirmed, 94 probable and 44 suspected.

Overall confirmed cases in the county are now at 45,979 while probable cases are at 20,594 and total suspected cases are at 997.

Currently, 2,362 cases are considered active.

Additionally, the county reported 384 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19, of which 149 are receiving treatment in an intensive care unit.

In Cameron County, nine more residents died due to COVID-19 related complications and another 111 tested positive.

That brings the total number of deaths there to 1,366 and the total number of COVID-19 cases to 35,736. Of those, 6,184 are considered active.

Additionally, the county reported that four county employees tested positive including two employees from the Juvenile Probation Department, one from the Parks and Recreation Department, and one from the sheriff’s office, according to a news release issued by the county Friday.

Citing privacy laws, the county stated they would not release specific employee information.

Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño stated in the news release that the county allocated Moderna vaccine doses to the cities of Brownsville and Port Isabel as well as different entities and doctor’s offices that are approved vaccine providers.

He added that on Friday they held a second dose vaccination clinic in Harlingen and are scheduled to hold two second dose vaccination clinics next week.

Individuals should be getting their second dose at the same location where they received their first dose, the county judge said.
