12 die due to COVID-19 in Hidalgo County; 6 in Cameron

Eighteen deaths linked to COVID-19 were reported in the Rio Grande Valley on Thursday, along with 685 new cases. 

A dozen of those deaths were reported in Hidalgo County, along with 579 of the new cases. 

The county’s death toll now stands at 2,478, according to a county news release Thursday, while the total case count is 66,851. 

Of the new cases, 337 are confirmed, 238 probable and four suspected. 

County officials also reported that 603 people were released from isolation because of COVID-19 on Thursday, leaving 2,414 active cases in the country. So far, a total of 61,959 people have recovered from the virus. 

Additionally, there are currently 385 people fighting the virus in local hospitals, of which 148 are in intensive care units. 

Neighboring Cameron County confirmed six additional deaths due to COVID-19 on Thursday, raising the death toll to 1,357, according to a county news release. 

County officials also reported 89 new cases of the virus, bringing that total to 35,625. Additionally, 245 people recovered from the virus, adding to the 29,232 total recoveries in the county. 

Also on Thursday, 17 additional cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Willacy County, according to county Judge Aurelio “Keter” Guerra. The total number of cases now stands at 2,022.
