Registration to begin for vaccine clinics planned in Mission, Pharr

More vaccine efforts were announced Wednesday in Mission and Pharr.

Partnering with municipalities and school districts, Hidalgo County is planning vaccine clinics in Mission and Pharr on Thursday and Friday.

A partnership between the county, Mission CISD, the city of Mission and Sharyland ISD, the Mission clinic is aimed at elderly residents, according to a news release.

Registration for the Mission clinic opens at noon Wednesday at Sharyland High School. Eligible residents are instructed to drive through the north side entrance of the campus, by the tennis courts, and to bring their own pen and wear a face mask.

Eligible residents will be issued a colored wristband, the release says, which will display their return time for the clinic, which will be held at the Mission Event Center on Thursday.

“We are proud to be able to provide over 50 district employees in support of this important community initiative,” Dr. Carol G. Perez, Mission CISD superintendent, wrote. “Getting as many people vaccinated against COVID-19 as quickly as possible will help save lives and brings our community that much closer to being able to resume more normal activities. We are honored to be able to work with our community partners anytime, but now more than ever.”

The clinic will provide wristbands on a first come, first serve basis due to limited vaccine, a release said. Individuals with COVID-19 symptoms or who have been exposed to the virus are advised to stay away.

“Sharyland ISD is ecstatic to partner with the City of Mission, Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Commissioner’s Office, and Mission CISD in such a great endeavor that will help keep our community safe, especially our most vulnerable, our elderly residents,” Sharyland ISD Superintendent Maria Vidaurri wrote. “COVID-19 has caused heartache to our region, but together we have persevered. I commend and thank all the workers that have helped organize this event, and the staff that will be administering the vaccines.”

Registration for the Pharr clinic is open online at www.pharrvaccines.info, although the registration website appears to have crashed due to abnormally high traffic.

That clinic is free to anyone 65 and older who registers online. Walk-ins are prohibited.
