Brownsville Repertory Theater to perform live Hamlet this weekend

The Brownsville Repertory Theater will perform Shakespeare’s Hamlet this weekend both online and in person at the Saint Joseph Academy.

The show will premier at 7 p.m. Friday and will continue at the same time on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $15 for in-person or online and can be purchased online at their Facebook page or emailing [email protected].

“Hamlet is considered by most scholars as the greatest play of all time,” Chris Ikner, artistic director for the Brownsville Repertory Theater, said. “We are very excited to be presenting it. This was actually our first full length production that we did this summer. We did this play virtually, so, we did a filmed version of this play and now, in January, we are presenting live and via live stream at Saint Joseph Academy.”

The play has a cast of eight actors that consist of seven of their youth conservatory company members as well as one resident artist.

To follow COVID-19 safety measures, there will be very limited seating as well as mandatory face masks at all times.

“If they come to see this play in person, we do have all COVID-19 procedures in place. It’s a limited audience,” Ikner said.

“Or they could also see it online. Definitely check it out because it has been such a fantastic process, I’ve had the opportunity to work with eight of the smartest actors, it’s been a really fantastic experience for them, getting to tackle this challenging script and performing a really beautiful production.”

Ikner said the team is excited to start the year 2021 with one of the most popular plays of all time and hopes the community experiences this epic experience either online or in person.

“It’s a wonderful introduction to Shakespeare, it’s being presented in a way that people are sure to really understand and connect with the text itself because these actors are just brilliant at what they do,” he said.

“This play and the way we are presenting it is very, very important for our time right now.  Especially in the situation we found ourselves in under the restrictions of COVID. This play is really all about self-reflection and where do we go from where we are right now, in this present moment? It’s a great opportunity for people to come and try to use theater as self-reflection. It’s going to be really, really exciting for our audiences to see.”
