27 more COVID-19 deaths in the region

Hidalgo County surpasses 60,000 virus cases

Twenty-one more deaths linked to COVID-19 symptoms were confirmed in Hidalgo County on Friday, bringing the death toll to 2,361.

Hidalgo last reported a death toll that high in early October 2020.

Among those who died, the youngest include a Donna man in his 20s, and a Mercedes woman in her 30s, according to a county release.

An additional 709 new cases of the virus were also announced, bringing that total to 60,213.

Of the new cases, 375 are confirmed, 321 probable and 13 suspected.

Also on Friday, 627 people were released from isolation due to the COVID-19, adding to the total 55,806 recoveries in the county.

Officials also confirmed that 418 people currently fighting the virus are in local hospitals, of which 140 are in intensive care units.

Neighboring Cameron County reported six additional deaths due to COVID-19 on Friday, along with 231 new cases.

The death toll there is now 1,263, according to a county release, and the total case count is 33,748.

The county also confirmed that 130 people have been released from isolation because of the virus. So far, a total of 27,755 have recovered from COVID-19.

Also on Friday, officials in Starr County confirmed 104 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the number of active cases there to 722.

So far, 5,743 people have recovered from the virus in the county, and 213 have died.
