Cameron County Tax Office to open drive-thru lanes in San Benito

Taxpayers in San Benito will have a designated drive-thru location to pay their taxes in the near future with the recent purchase of an old bank building by Cameron County.

The county bought the old San Benito Bank and Trust located at 198 S. Sam Houston and it will be used by the Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office that will allow residents to have a drive-thru location to pay their taxes.

Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre Jr. said his office has nine locations county-wide with the majority of them providing drive-thru services and he and the Commissioners Court agreed that it was time for San Benito to have one as well.

Yzaguirre said the drive-thru lanes are currently being remodeled and should be operational by either late February or early March.

“These drive-thru lanes should be a big help in collecting property taxes for the county as well as the taxing jurisdictions we collect, the City of San Benito, San Benito ISD and other districts the Tax Office collects for,” Yzaguirre said in a press release.

Property taxes, contract agreements, issue registration renewals, TABC payments/renewals and or collections for VIT, will be the business residents can conduct. Motor vehicle transfers will not be conducted in the drive-thru since this process is time consuming and complicated, Yzaguirre said.

The main building will be completely remodeled sometime this year and will house the Tax Office, Constable’s Office, Justice of the Peace and possibly other county offices.
