County to open two COVID-19 vaccination clinics

Cameron County will host two COVID-19 vaccination clinics this week where the Moderna vaccine will be administered to 2,350 individuals at each location.

The first clinic will take place from 6 a.m. until supplies last or 6 p.m.  today at the Los Fresnos Fire Department, located at 100 Rodeo Dr. in Los Fresnos. The second one will take place at the same time Friday at the Brownsville Sports Park located at 1100 Sports Park Blvd.

The vaccine will be administered to individuals who are 65 years of age and older or individuals of 18 years of age and older with underlying health conditions. Frontline healthcare workers who have not received their vaccine will also be eligible to receive it.

“Cameron County Public Health received 6,000 vaccines on Friday, January 8, 2021 of which 1,000 were administered in addition to the already allocated 1,000 doses at the COVID-19 vaccination clinic held at Casa del Sol in Harlingen,” the press release reads.

“The remaining doses will be administered for individuals within the Phase 1A and 1B priority groups.”

Phase 1B guidelines include persons who are 65 years of age or older, and persons of 18 years of age or older with at least one of the following chronic medical health conditions: cancer; chronic kidney disease; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; heart conditions such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies; solid organ transplant; obesity and severe obesity (body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher); pregnancy; sickle cell disease or type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Cameron County Public Health has partnered with the Los Fresnos Independent School District to administer the vaccines. The vaccinations will be available on a first come, first served basis.

“The public is asked to please remain in your vehicle upon arrival and complete the consent registration form ahead of time,” the press release reads.

The forms can be found at cameroncounty.us/publichealth/index.php/coronavirus/.

Forms will also be provided on site. No drop-offs or walk-ins will be allowed.

It is expected that Cameron County Public Health will receive additional COVID-19 vaccines in future weeks and will provide additional vaccination clinic updates as allocations are confirmed, the press release reads.
