Teller shot in bank robbery

HARLINGEN — A morning robbery at Texas Regional Bank here left a bank teller injured from a gunshot, police said.

Harlingen police officers were dispatched Friday morning at around 9:45 a.m. to the bank on 77 Sunshine Strip, police Sgt. Larry Moore said.

The caller advised a man wearing a mask entered the bank, displayed a handgun and shot the bank teller, police said.

He then proceeded to demand money from another teller at the window. After receiving the money, the man fled the scene on a bicycle, police said.

A man matching the description of the bank robber was later located at Ed Carey Drive and 25th Street, police said.

He had in his possession a black handgun believed to have been used in the bank robbery and the currency from the robbery, police said in a statement released Friday afternoon.

The suspect was detained and transported to the Harlingen City Jail, police said.

The injured teller was transported by EMS to a local hospital and had undergone surgery, police said.

Moore said the teller was out of surgery by 3 p.m. and was doing well.

The robbery is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be pending, a press release by the Harlingen Police Department said.
