Costa Cleanups to host beach cleanup at Barracuda Cove

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Residents and visitors of the Laguna Madre area have the chance to explore the ocean and help the environment.

Costa Cleanups, a South Padre Island organization, will host a Beach Cleanup with the Dolphins event on Saturday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The cleanup will take place at Barracuda Cove, which is across from the Isla Blanca Park Jetties and is on the south side of the Brownsville Ship Channel.

Costa Cleanups members state that this is an area where ocean trash and litter accumulate, and many turtles wash up.

Participants wanting to attend the cleanup by a free boat ride are asked to meet at the picnic table between Lobo Del Mar and Longboards to board Tritoon Charters’ pontoon boat.

Attendees are asked to wear a mask on the boat, use hand sanitizer before boarding and practice social distancing.

Those who will be attending the cleanup by private boat or 4X4 vehicles are asked to meet Costa Cleanups at Barracuda Cove at 10 a.m.

Costa Cleanups members recommend 4X4 motorists drive past SpaceX and take a left at the Boca Chica Beach Jetties.

Event organizers recommend participants bring drinks, a reusable cup, sunblock, a swimsuit, proper shoes, a mask and trash grabber, if possible.

Additionally, they recommend participants secure their belongings or leave them in their vehicle.

“We may get wet and if the water is nice, we may get in the water,” event organizers stated. “We will also have T-shirts and other items for sale for fundraising for future cleanup events.”

Costa Cleanups will provide trash bags, reusable garden gloves and some trash grabbers.

After the cleanup, there will be a shrimp boil by Captain Mark Guillot and Guillot Seafoods, a campfire, prizes and music.

According to Costa Cleanups vice president Tonya Tallard, at least 72 people have registered as of Wednesday.
