The Texas Department of Transportation encourages residents living in its Pharr District, which includes Brooks, Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, Starr, Willacy and Zapata counties, to participate in a survey pertaining to bicycle needs in the area.

According to TxDOT, it wants to identify opportunities to develop bikeway networks integrated with the state system to improve safety, connectivity and access within and between districts.

The Pharr District is one of four in the state chosen to be part of the pilot program. The other districts are Bryan, Laredo and San Antonio.

“The district bike plans will analyze needs on the highway system, prioritize routes, and identify potential solution types. The planning process will help develop an approach that can be applied in all 25 TxDOT districts. This effort will include technical studies, stakeholder engagement, and virtual public events,” TxDOT stated in a news release.

Filling out the survey takes about five to 10 minutes and some of the questions on survey include the following:

>> Tell us what is important to you;

>> Do you have access to a bike or personnel vehicle, what is the most common way you use to travel around and what are the two most common reasons for traveling during a typical week?;

>> Safety concerns, poor biking condition, biking gap or barrier, locations I like to bike;

>> Zip code and some personal information.

TxDOT plans to have virtual public meetings with the four planned areas early this year, and statewide virtual meetings in the spring. A final statewide bicycle analysis and four district bicycle plans will be presented later in the year.
