PSJA high principal resigns following legal dispute

Alejandro Elias

The former principal of PSJA Early College High School resigned Wednesday in the midst of a high-profile dispute with the district over a reassignment to a central office position he said he didn’t want.

A release from PSJA says the district accepted Alejandro Elias’ voluntary resignation Wednesday during a board meeting.

The board was scheduled to discuss a resolution to a lawsuit Elias filed against the district this month, but court documents say the lawsuit was settled through mediation.

All discussion on that resolution happened in closed session. Trustees voted unanimously to approve it.

According to the district’s release, Elias resigned “to pursue other endeavors.”

“PSJA ISD would like to wish him well in future endeavors and thank Dr. Elias for his years of service and all the academic accomplishments achieved under his leadership,” the release said.

Attempts to reach Elias after the meeting were unsuccessful.

The dispute between the former principal and the district was very public, bitter and litigious.

Elias’ reassignment to a central office position from his longtime campus in late July prompted an online petition calling for his reinstatement as principal.

Elias sued the district in August, alleging he was being politically retaliated against and that he was never notified of his reassignment in writing.

The district countered in court filings, denying that the reassignment was in any way improper or that it had failed to notify Elias of his reassignment.
