A second person died in a rollover from Wednesday morning that started in La Joya.

La Joya police tried to pull over a green Ford Expedition traveling near Farm-to-Market Road 2221 about 7:50 a.m., but the driver refused to stop, according to La Joya Police Sgt. Manuel Casas.

The vehicle sped off from FM 2221 to Abram Road, just north of the 8 Mile Line, where the driver lost control and rolled over on the caliche road.

A man, who police have not yet identified, was ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries. Casas said investigators are working to determine where he was seated.

A woman and two other men traveling in the vehicle were injured. One was flown via helicopter and the other two were taken to DHR Health hospital, but by the afternoon a 31-year-old man from Mexico succumbed to his injuries and died in the hospital, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS will be handling the crash investigation; investigators believe the woman was the driver, but Casas said they’re still working out the details.

La Joya police will be handling the criminal investigation. A preliminary investigation indicated some of the passengers were smuggled into the U.S., but the cause for the evasion to the stop is unknown.
