Edinburg man who fled fatal San Juan vehicle crash indicted

Jorge Sanchez Jr.

An Edinburg man involved in an October crash on the interstate in San Juan that killed a man is scheduled to be arraigned next week on a charge of accident involving death.

San Juan police arrested 50-year-old Jorge Sanchez Jr. on Nov. 4 on a charge of accident involving death after he fled the scene of the crash, contacted a towing service and was later arrested.

Police began looking for him after the owner of a Mercedes towing company that received Sanchez’s vehicle saw “fresh blood and body tissue” on its hood, according to a probable cause affidavit.

On Oct. 16, at about 2:03 a.m., San Juan Communications received a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle crash where police found a gray Nissan Sentra and Rodolfo Alvarado face down, without both legs and dead in the area of 800 block of West Interstate 2.

Sgt. Elias Lopez made contact with a woman at the scene who stated she was feeling severe pain in her back.

“Sgt. E. Lopez was then informed by a witness that a silver in color Mustang struck the Nissan Sentra from behind losing control and spinning out,” the complaint said.

The witness added that two men exited the Mustang and approached the Sentra before running back into their vehicle and leaving the scene.

Later that morning, at about 6:09 a.m., Lopez received a call from a man identified as David Zapata who stated he was the owner of Steel Towing in Mercedes and added that he had custody of a Mustang with blood and tissue on it.

Zapata told Lopez that he was called by Sanchez to pick up his Mustang.

“Mr. Zapata stated [Sanchez] started crying once he observed blood on the front of his Ford Mustang,” the complaint said.

San Juan police took custody of the vehicle after the report was made.

Sanchez was booked a few weeks later on Nov. 4 and was later indicted on Dec. 1.

He remains jailed at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a $250,000 bond and is set to be arraigned next Monday.
