Hidalgo County deputies arrest alleged Rio Grande City kidnapper during traffic stop

Mateo Garza

Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man from Rio Grande City on Wednesday after he allegedly kidnapped a Mission man and demanded ransom.

Mateo Garza, 46, was charged with aggravated kidnapping after authorities managed to pull Garza over and rescued Martin Sanchez.

According to a criminal complaint, deputies responded to 3505 Serenidad in Mission on Wednesday and spoke with Marcelo Sanchez, Martin’s brother. He told deputies that their mother, Maria Trejo, had been receiving calls for a ransom of $3,000 in exchange for her son, Martin.

Marcelo said he spoke with Garza and agreed to pay the ransom in order to free his brother.

“Sheriff’s deputies were informed that a truck arrived with Martin and the direction it left,” the complaint said.

The deputies subsequently managed to conduct a traffic stop on Garza’s vehicle and rescued Martin who said he had been beaten and held against his will.

As of early Thursday afternoon, Garza had not yet received a bond for his charges and remained jailed.
