Two dead in Edinburg crash on I-69; north and south lanes temporarily closed

Edinburg police officers are currently investigating a major crash on I-69 that left two dead, closed lanes and rerouted traffic, the Edinburg Police Department said on Facebook.

Police were dispatched at approximately 5:30 a.m. to the 4000 block of south I-69C regarding the incident, according to a news release.

Upon arrival, officers observed a gray Chrysler Crossfire had rolled over in the northbound lanes and saw a female lying on the roadway next to the vehicle, the release said.

At the scene, officers also saw a white Dodge Ram pick-up truck with damage to its front end on the driver’s side as well as a Peterbilt big rig with a car transport trailer stopped along the expressway, according to the release.

The two Crossfire occupants, a female driver and a male passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their identities are not being released pending notification of next of kin.

At the time police reported the incident on Facebook, the southbound lanes on the expressway between Trenton and Nolana are temporarily shut down as well as the northbound lanes between Nolana and Canton.

Traffic is being rerouted to the frontage roads.

Police say the crash is still under investigation and toxicology results are pending, the release said.
