Pharr, Edinburg to distribute sandbags Saturday

At least two Hidalgo County cities are distributing sandbags Saturday in anticipation of severe weather as a potential tropical cyclone nears the Rio Grande Valley and may drench the region over the weekend.

The city of Pharr will be distributing sandbags Saturday at two locations for local residents and businesses.

Sandbags will be available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pharr EMS Headquarters located at 3000 N. Cage Blvd., and at the Pharr Development & Research Center at 850 W. Dicker Road.  

“We encourage all residents and businesses to stay alert and prepared for expected inclement weather ahead of the tropical storm that is anticipated to impact our area this weekend,” Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez said in a news release.

Six sandbags will be available per residence and 12 sandbags per business. Residents must bring their own shovels and fill their own bags. And proof of residency, such as a water bill or driver’s license, is required.

There will be help for people with disabilities.

EDINBURG

In Edinburg, sandbag distribution will begin for local residents at 9 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. at the Edinburgh City Service Center, located at 1201 N. Doolittle Road.

Sandbags will be limited to six per household and eight per business while stocks last.

City officials said if residents bring their own bags, the city will provide sand.

Residents must live within the city limits of and must provide a current utility bill with an address and ID, the city said on Facebook.
