The La Joya man who is accused of shooting and killing another man in self-defense was arraigned Wednesday on a first-degree murder charge.
The charge stems from an incident that occurred in the 2000 block of West Redbud Avenue in McAllen on Monday. Authorities arrived at 3:35 p.m. in reference to shots fired and found the body of 56-year-old Luis Alonzo Gonzalez Sanchez.
McAllen police identified the suspect in the shooting as 30-year-old Gerardo Chapa, who authorities said he claimed to have shot the victim in self-defense.
Chapa told police he shot Gonzalez Sanchez with a “handgun that he had in his vehicle” after an argument between the two, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Police further said in the affidavit that several witnesses said they saw Chapa shoot the victim.
Chapa has since been released on a $75,000 bond.
