HARLINGEN — The Career Services department at Texas State Technical College has a mission, and that is to help TSTC students and alumni find a great-paying career.

That is a commitment that Drake Everett shares as the department’s new Career Services representative in Harlingen. He recently transitioned from a job as a student worker in the same department.

Everett is also a current TSTC student who is pursuing an Associate of Science degree in Computer Science.

“I am part of a great team and ecosystem at TSTC Career Services,” he said. “I continue to build rapport with TSTC students and alumni by polishing their resumes through some of the tools we utilize, such as hireTSTC.”

Everett also helps students and alumni learn how to make a good impression during job interviews.

“My duties also include being in charge of the interview practicum,” he said. “It helps these individuals improve their interview skills. I also assist by improving a person’s soft skills, such as communication and leadership.”

Everett’s efforts are making a positive impact.

Javier Flores, of Harlingen, is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in TSTC’s Automotive Technology program and has benefited from Everett’s help.

“I requested resume assistance because mine was lacking in some areas,” Flores said. “I have worked at an area automotive transmission shop for five months now. I wanted that to reflect on my resume when potential employers review it. Mr. Everett did a fantastic job. Now I feel confident when I apply for a job at an automotive dealership.”

TSTC alumna Juliana Campos, of Mercedes, earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Welding Technology in 2021, followed by a certificate of completion in Structural and Pipe Welding last spring.

She said Everett improved her resume dramatically.

“I am interested in a support technician job at the aerospace manufacturer SpaceX’s launch facility in Brownsville,” Campos said. “Mr. Everett spruced up my resume with additional welding terminology.”

Viviana Espinoza, TSTC’s director of Career Services, said Everett is self-driven with positive leadership qualities.

“(He) shares the department’s vision,” she said. “His ambition to place these individuals in high-paying jobs is admirable.”
