Valley border agents arrest sex offender, gang members

A convicted sex offender and three suspected gang members were arrested this week by Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley after illegally crossing the border, according to an agency news release.

On Friday, Kingsville Border Patrol agents working at the Javier Vega Jr. Checkpoint apprehended Gilberto Magana-Chavarria who was revealed to be a Mexican national convicted in 2017 by an Oklahoma County District Court on two counts of indecent acts with a child and abuse of a child under the age of 16, the release stated.

Magana-Chavarria was sentenced to five years incarceration and 20 years of probation for each of the charges.

Earlier this week, McAllen Border Patrol agents apprehended a group of 13 individuals who had entered the United States illegally, south of Peñitas, on Wednesday.

Record checks revealed one of the Mexican nationals to be a member of the Gulf Cartel.

On Monday, McAllen agents apprehended a group of 25 people entering the U.S. illegally in Mission and identified one El Salvadoran man as an 18th Street gang member who was previously removed from the country in 2018, according to the release.

Later that evening, agents working near Hidalgo apprehended a group of 74 individuals after illegally entering the U.S. and found a Honduran national whose records revealed him to be a Mara Salvatrucha gang member.

All subjects were processed accordingly.

Agents around the nation have arrested 279 gang members and, of those, 150 were arrested in the Rio Grande Valley this fiscal year, the release stated.
