Another 4 dead due to COVID-19 in Hidalgo County; Youth lead cases as hospitalizations remain in 50s

Hidalgo County officials on Thursday confirmed four more people died due to COVID-19 in addition to another 113 people who tested positive for the virus, according to a county news release.

The four people who succumbed to the virus were a McAllen man in his 20s, a Weslaco man in his 50s, a San Juan woman in her 60s and a Donna man in his 70s; increasing the county’s death toll to 2,919.

Of the 113 cases reported by the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department on Thursday, 83 were confirmed, 30 probable and none suspected.

Nearly half of the cases reported Thursday were led by people younger than 19, with a total of 52 cases. Young adults in their 20s were the next-highest group, with a total of 40 cases. Adults in their 30s trailed behind with 12 cases.

The county’s case tally is 93,854, of which 61,162 were confirmed, 30,455 probable and 2,237 suspected.

According to a release from the county, a total of 485 cases are active.

Officials also reported 54 people were hospitalized in county hospitals, with 21 patients in intensive care units.

Additionally, the county reported 102 individuals were released from isolation Thursday, increasing that total to 90,450.

As of Thursday, a total of 539,931 COVID-19 tests had been administered in Hidalgo County, with 445,226 results returning negative.

In Cameron County, officials reported a total of 48 positive COVID-19 cases Thursday and one death related to the virus, according to a county news release.

Previously, the county reported no COVID-related deaths on Wednesday.

The death reported Thursday was a Harlingen woman in her 80s, slightly increasing the county’s death toll to 1,694.

Of the 48 cases reported Thursday, Cameron County officials noted 33 were from facilities housing unaccompanied minors, such as shelters and detention centers.

All 33 cases reported from the facilities were youth in the age group 10-19.

The remaining 15 cases in Cameron County outside the facilities were led by adults in their 30s, with five cases. Youth between 0-9 and 10-19 tied with 3 cases respectively. The remaining four cases were two young adults in their 20s and two adults in their 40s.

As of Thursday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Cameron County is 42,629.

Additionally, the county also reported 87 individuals recovered from the virus on Thursday, increasing that total to 40,110.

As for Cameron County’s vaccination efforts, officials said 65.51 percent of their 12 and older population are fully vaccinated, with 76.73 percent receiving at least one dose.

The county also reported that 80.90 percent of their 65 and older population are fully vaccinated, with 88.86 percent receiving at least one dose.
