Reynosa Saturday shooting death toll increases to 19

The death toll from Saturday’s shooting in Reynosa increased to 19, according to a news release from the State of Tamaulipas.

The shooting happened Saturday evening in several eastern Reynosa neighborhoods and close to the Mexican side of the Pharr International bridge. The spree left 15 civilians dead. Deadly confrontations between state police and the armed men also left four aggressors dead.

Initially, only 14 civilians died, but one person later died at a hospital.

“I express my solidarity to the families of the innocent victims who died as a result of these actions of organized crime in Reynosa. My government will give them the necessary support in these difficult times,” a statement issued Sunday by Tamaullipas Governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca read.

An investigation was initiated by the state, but on Monday, the news release confirmed the attorney’s general office would be taking the lead on the multi-homicide investigation.

The news release also stated authorities believe criminal groups linked to organized crime and operating in the region of “Matamoros, Rio Bravo and Reynosa” could have been involved.
