BISD names director of health services

The Brownsville Independent School District announced the appointment of Alonso Guerrero as director of health services to be  based at the Central Administration Building, 708 Palm Blvd.

“I am excited to welcome Alonso in his new role as BISD’s director of health services,” Superintendent René Gutiérrez said. “He is well accomplished in his field and career to be in this administrative position.”

In his new role, Guerrero will provide administrative expertise and leadership relative to the school health program, administering and directing the program by planning and establishing organizational framework for achieving its goals and objectives and other designated areas in a manner consistent with board policy and regulatory standards.

Since 2017, Guerrero has been the school nurse at Filemón B. Vela Middle School in charge of student safety, medication compliance, and care plan adherence. Prior to joining Vela, he was assigned to Aiken Elementary. He earned his license as a registered nurse in 2016.

Before joining BISD, Guerrero was a part-time licensed vocational nurse at Greater Valley Hospice in Harlingen. He attended to client needs and was promoted to assistant director of nurses in charge of scheduling, supply inventory and quality assurance.

“It’s a great privilege to have been selected for this position, especially during the pandemic,” said Guerrero. “I am a product of BISD and I am very proud to be working here. I love the healthcare field and I will do my best to place our student’s safety first and ensure continued success at the district.”

Guerrero is currently pursuing his Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington and will graduate this spring. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington.
