The Texas Water Development Board approved financial assistance totaling $5,263,284 from the Flood Infrastructure Fund (FIF) for local projects receiving federal grant award matching funds.
Two valley cities, including Harlingen, received the vast majority of the money.
- $1,349,394 to the City of Harlingen (Cameron County) for storm sewer system upgrades and implementation of stormwater pollution prevention plan measures
- $3,002,708 to the City of Weslaco (Hidalgo County) for design and construction of major drainage improvements
- $895,208 to the City of Marble Falls (Llano County) for the installation of a two-way bridge at the Avenue N crossing of Backbone Creek
- $15,974 to Llano County to update and consolidate the Llano and San Saba counties hazard mitigation plan
Passed by the 86th Texas Legislature and approved by voters through a constitutional amendment in 2019, the FIF was created to provide funding for drainage, flood mitigation, and flood control projects.
“Over the last 18 months, our agency conducted extensive outreach and planning to ensure the new Flood Infrastructure Fund program would be able to serve the diverse flood project needs of Texas communities,” said Peter Lake, Chairman of the Texas Water Development Board. “Today’s approved projects are just the first of many projects to be funded through the FIF for communities taking a proactive role in addressing their local and regional flood issues.”
The TWDB is the state agency charged with collecting and disseminating water-related data, assisting with regional water and flood planning, and preparing the state water and flood plans.
