Brownsville airport to unveil new terminal

The Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport will hold an unveiling event for its new terminal and officials are giving the public a chance to attend by registering for it.

Registrants have the opportunity to win one of the 200 available parking passes to take their family to the in person event. The winners will park drive-in theater-style and enjoy the show from their cars. The evening event will include an unveiling ceremony, music, speakers, fireworks, and a virtual tour of the inside of the new terminal.

Registration is ongoing and ends at 5 p.m. Sunday. The individuals chosen to see the live event will be selected randomly and will be notified by telephone and or by email.

The new airport terminal had been under construction since 2019 and officials had hoped to have a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the new terminal that the public could attend in person. However, the COVID-19 pandemic interfered with that plan and had officials trying to find another way to show the new $43 million terminal, said Francisco Partida, special projects manager for the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport.

“It was very hard because we were trying to plan this since a year ago,” Partida said.

With the help of Tequila GroupIntergrated Marketing, officials decided on the contest that would give everyone a chance to win a pass to attend the Grand Unveiling Ceremony.

“By the end of October we had a pretty clear idea that this needs to be a very limited in person event, and having the new two parking lots available made it for a great idea of a drive-in theater type of thing,” Partida said.

Registration for the event began on Tuesday and in the first 11 hours 80 people had already entered the contest, Partida said. “People are sharing it (on social media) they are liking it, they are commenting…I think it is going to be very positive,” he said.

The unveiling event will be live streamed on the airport’s Facebook page and its website.

“We are going to be able to put this on the website and the social media channels so we can reach that broader audience not only in Brownsville and the lower Rio Grande Valley, but nationwide,” Partida said.
