Cameron County received a $1.8 million grant to make sure the November election runs smoothly.
Elections Administrator Remi Garza says the funds come from the Center for Tech and Civil Life and meant to help ensure his office has the staffing, training and equipment necessary so that every eligible voter can take part in the election.
“This is great news. We are grateful to have been awarded these funds,” Garza said. “The county will be able to expand early voting, hire additional staff and poll workers, purchase additional equipment and supplies to handle the increase in voters and deal safely with COVID-19.”
The grant will cover the cost of absentee ballot assembly, processing equipment and support staff for early voting and Election day.
“These funds will go a long way in making sure we can serve the voters and handle the challenges that we will face in the coming weeks,” Garza said.
The Cameron County Commissioners Court will formally accept the grant at Tuesday’s meeting.
