LETTERS: Prisoners need air-conditioning, Modern Atlantis

Most of us sit, eat and sleep in air-conditioned rooms, close to a fan or even under the shade of a nearby tree trying to stay cool and hydrated in this record-breaking heat wave that is causing havoc in so many ways. Even the homeless and illegal immigrants are given some sort of haven to protect themselves from the punishing heat.

EDITORIAL: Effort to help refugee process should inspire reform efforts

One of the major failings of President Joe Biden’s efforts to cull down the number of asylum cases is its primary mandate, that refugees must initiate their petitions within their home countries or another country through which they travel to get to the United States.

COMMENTARY: Fraud, insurrection and limits to the First Amendment

I love my neighbors. But let’s suppose I don’t. Let’s suppose that my neighbor and I have a genuine dislike for each other. What is more, I want the three feet lying on the far side of my fence that are currently part of his yard. Hatred, envy, greed all come together in my mind, and I hatch a plan to get rid of that neighbor.

LETTERS: Keep TNR in town, Complaints expressed

About 15 years ago there was good news. Several residents in Rancho Viejo made the decision to start a trap-neuter-return program. TNR was an incredible victory for both the cats and the community. It has proven to be highly beneficial for Rancho Viejo residents, the town government and town businesses. Everyone needs to support the continuation of the program. TNR is a community effort.

LETTERS: Response to letter, Immoral actions

Heartfelt thanks to Mr. Rene Castillo of San Antonio for writing his letter of July 21. I have never read a more accurate statement of the mindset of a MAGA Republican. That of course being totally biased and totally anti-American misinformation.

COMMENTARY: Hidalgo County should not open its own animal shelter

During the past 18 years, I’ve had a front-row seat to the horrors and the vast improvements in the treatment of the Valley’s stray animals. To watch Hidalgo County officials seriously investigate building and running their own large-intake facility means going back in time, back to some dark days and backward thinking when animal control officers were referred to as “dog catchers” and the “dog pound” was where animals went to die.

LETTERS: Not green enough, Bidens accused

Bravo to Futuro RGV, the sponsors and South Texas College for hosting the Building a Thriving RGV workshop presentations on the Pecan campus in McAllen.

LETTERS: Trump backed, One-sided rhetoric

Several of your more liberal contributors make some valid points and I welcome that! It is amazing to see certain issues through the eyes of others and that is not a bad thing.

COMMENTARY: Proposed air quality regulations threaten South Texas growth

South Texas is becoming a national hub for manufacturing. Our area has added 2,000 new manufacturing jobs over the past five years, representing about 30% of all new manufacturing jobs in the U.S., according to Mike Willis of the South Texas Manufacturing Association.

LETTERS: Trump defense draws response

On July 16, Rene Castillo declared that the sole intention of Democrats was to undermine Donald Trump’s administration. I think he’s a bit confused.
