Editorial: People who oppose proposed Texas Parks and SpaceX land exchange might consider other...

Property rights should be sacrosanct, and in Texas many people like to say they are. The reality, of course, is more complicated, as as evidenced by recent efforts to place border barriers on private land and the current fight between state and federal government over access to a municipal park in Eagle Pass. State officials complain about federal intrusions in the area and have blocked Border Patrol agents from moving through the park to reach the federal border, ignoring their own sin in seizing the park and other land from the city and county that own it.

Editorial: Ruling on border blockade doesn’t resolve the issue of federal-state jurisdiction

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday gave the federal government permission to cut or remove razor wire and other obstructions from the U.S. border along the Rio Grande. The greater issue of whether the state has the authority to place such obstructions on the international border, however, remain unresolved.

Editorial: Border issues require cooperation rather than confrontation

The waves of people coming to our borders seeking asylum is a crisis that has plagued our country for nearly a decade. It's only getting worse as wars, failed governance and economic collapse around the world drive more and more people to flee their home countries and seek refuge in this country, which has long been a bastion of hope, freedom and economic opportunity. The numbers of refugees have overwhelmed U.S. officials as the backlog of requests for safe haven continues to rise.

Editorial: Valley officials need to be vigilant against computer hack threats

A popular storyline in fantasy crime stories involves an evil genius or terrorist group that threatens to inject a poison or mind-altering drug into a city’s water system. That threat is becoming less of a fantasy and more of a reality in our nation’s increasingly automated, and internet-based, utility systems.

Editorial: Improvement in veterans’ healthcare options is welcome

Veterans and government officials in the Rio Grande Valley have long argued that the region’s large and growing population of military veterans warrants the placement of a military hospital. Fortunately, however, veterans’ healthcare options in South Texas are improving, and we hope those improvements continue.

Editorial: Honesty needs to be given more importance in upcoming elections

Who is Mayra Flores? As the San Benito Republican campaigns to return to Congress, that question is gaining frequency — and importance. Voters should consider the question, and the circumstances surrounding it, as they make their choices this election season.

EDITORIAL: In our democratic system voters deserve the right to determine Trump’s fate

The 2024 presidential election promises to be one of if not the most chaotic in our nation’s history. The Colorado Supreme Court and the Maine secretary of state have taken former president Donald Trump’s name off their primary ballots.
