McALLEN — The 2024 Democratic and Republican primaries kicked off Tuesday as voters across the Valley headed to the polls to cast their votes.

Voter turnout during the 2020 presidential primary’s first nine days of early voting remains ahead of the number of ballots cast thus far this year, according to Hidalgo and Cameron counties’ elections data.

Hidalgo and Cameron counties combined for over 4,500 ballots on the seventh day of early voting to begin its second week for the 2024 primary elections, but remain behind the last presidential primary’s turnout.

Early voting hit the 30,000 mark in its first week of polls being open in the Rio Grande Valley.

Now we're at more than 18,000 ballots cast.

Hidalgo and Cameron counties have garnered over 13,000 ballots after two days of early voting, continuing an uphill trend compared to the last primary.

Both Hidalgo and Cameron counties saw an increase in first day early voting numbers compared to the 2022 primary early voting turnout with a surge in the former’s mail-in ballots and the latter’s Cameron County Republican showing.

Early voting in Texas for the presidential primary election runs from Tuesday, Feb. 20 to Friday, March 1.

This May, officials in Mission will be asking voters to decide on a bevy of revisions and updates to the Mission City Charter.
