Got a plastic bag? New Workshop will put these bags to use

SAN BENITO — Is that plastic bag that holds all your plastic bags bulging?

Learn how to repurpose those plastic bags into something useful — make tote bags, baskets, mats or whatever your imagination will bring to fruition.

Strips of plastic bags are transformed into useful items by either knitting or crocheting through a process called Plarning.

This “plastic yarn,” or plarn, is magically transformed into useful items that are water-resistant, stain-resistant and perfect for beach and summer living.

A workshop to teach this process will be hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of Texas Master Naturalist on Wednesday, July 19, at the Cameron County Extension Office in San Benito from 1 to 4 p.m.

The fee is $15 for the workshop and #N crochet hook or #10 knitting needle, or $10 if you have your own.

Perfect for scout troops to make sit-upons, for senior groups to make mats for the homeless or for church groups to make totes to donate to those who have a need.

Bring your excess plastic bags and scissors, bring a friend, and join in the fun. This is a terrific summer activity.
