Brownsville police are investigating an auto-pedestrian accident that left a toddler dead.

Brownsville police are investigating an auto-pedestrian accident that left a toddler dead.

The accident happened sometime after noon today at Padre Island Highway and McKenzie Road.

Brownsville Fire Chief Carlos Elizondo said emergency medical personnel received a call for assistance at 12:26 p.m.

Elizondo said the toddler – a boy either two or three years old – was transported to Valley Regional Medical Center where he died.

The toddler’s mother was transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville. She received critical injuries, Elizondo said.

Authorities are trying to determine what the mother and son were doing on the roadway.

“They were walking. We don’t know if they were crossing the street or walking on the side shoulder,” Elizondo said.

The driver of a black Chevrolet Equinox who reportedly struck the mother and son stayed at the scene, authorities said.

Elizondo said authorities are trying to determine if the mother and son are from Brownsville.

“We don’t know that yet (if they are from Brownsville.) We didn’t have any actual demographics on either one of them. Since they were both unresponsive and unconscious we were unable to get any of that,” Elizondo said.
