Golf tourney slated to raise money for local Boys & Girls Club

SAN BENITO — A trusty Big Bertha may be all it takes to win a new Ford F-150 Lariat at the Tony Butler Golf course this month.

But only the first person to score a hole in one on a particular hole to be announced at the Boys and Girls Club of San Benito three-man scramble golf tournament can win the truck.

That is just one of the features set for an upcoming fundraiser.

The tournament will be held on July 29 at the Tony Butler Golf Course to raise money for the San Benito Boys and Girls Club.

“We are trying to offset the rest of the expenses of the club,” said Liz Chavez, Boys and Girls Club board president. “We are looking for 20 teams minimum.”

She said interested players have been calling in, but the registration forms are rolling in slowly.

Team entry is $250 and mulligans are $5, with a maximum of two per player.

Chavez said in the past, the club hosted an annual golf tournament so she and the current staff decided to bring it back to help raise money for the club’s needs.

“This is the first year we are starting up the golf tournament again,” Chavez said. “We are hoping it’s a success so we can bring it back annually.”

She said the Boys and Girls Club receives mostly privately donated funds for the club and operates off of one grant annually.

“Everything we raise this year is to put into the general revenue,” Chavez said.

The tournament will consist of cash prizes if there are 20 teams or more.

“There is breakfast and lunch available for the players,” Chavez said.

Currently, the Boys and Girls Club is servicing 150 children daily for the summer.

“We are at capacity,” Chavez said. “In the summer we have a calendar of activities.”

She said area leaders, Girl Scouts, law enforcement and other organizations drop by to interact with the kids and to speak with the children.
