SAN BENITO — Summer can be the hungriest time for children.
Students may not receive the meals they need to thrive during their summer break.
To combat the problem of hunger in this area, the USDA has implemented a summer feeding program for every child under the age of 18.
The San Benito district is again participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Seamless Summer Food Service Program. Any child under 18 years of age can receive a meal free of charge.
The district has been a part of this initiative for many years.
Nine schools, or sites, will serve breakfast and lunch, according to the schedule.
Officials estimate a large number of student attendance — 200, even 300, students — for breakfast and lunch.
The meals are open to anyone in the community under age 18, and they don’t have to be students at San Benito schools.
Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication for program information (for example, Braille, large print, audiotape, American sign language, etc.), should contact the agency (state or local) where they applied for benefits.
Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities may contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339.
In accordance with Federal civil rights laws and USDA civil rights regulations and policies, the USDA, its agencies, offices, and employees and institutions participating in or administering USDA programs are prohibited from discriminating based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity in any program or activity conducted or funded by USDA.
